The solemn feast of Pentecost is Fifty days after Easter Sunday and we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the beginning of their ministry to make disciples of all nations. As they were observing the Jewish feast of Pentecost, the Apostles and their followers were gathered in one place. At that time, “a noise like a strong driving wind came from the sky, tongues as of fire appeared, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.” Despite the fact that many had no common language, they were able to understand one another. On Pentecost Sunday, the clergy wear red vestments to signify the work of the Spirit, which came upon the disciples as tongues of fire. In many Christian churches and Catholic parishes, the people in the congregation are invited to wear red on that Sunday as well. A congregation with many dressed in red enhances the celebration, and is a visual reminder of the significance of the feast. Please consider wearing red next Sunday.
