Here at Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Church, consecrated low-gluten hosts are offered by a designated Eucharistic Minister (either ordinary or extraordinary) stationed in the baptismal font area for those who have such dietary restrictions. Notice, however, that these consecrated hosts are LOW-gluten; NOT gluten-free. This is because only bread and wine can be consecrated into the Precious Body and Blood of Christ; and bread contains gluten. Therefore, in the Catholic Church at Catholic Mass, gluten-free hosts cannot be used. The good news is that there are people being treated for gluten allergies who can consume a low-gluten host without experiencing an adverse physical effect. That’s because there is less than 0.01% gluten in one of these hosts. Such a decision is, of course, personal and should be made after consultation with one’s physician.
So, here’s how this important matter is currently being handled at MMR Church. Low-gluten hosts are placed in a designated ciborium (quite distinguishable in design and size from the other ciboria), and reserved solely for this use. At all times, the low-gluten hosts are kept separate from the other hosts consecrated at Mass.
